Gas is short for gasoline.
"The word "gasolene" was coined in 1865 from the word gas and the chemical suffix -ine/-ene. The modern spelling was first used in 1871. The shortened form "gas" was first recorded in American English in 1905.[1] Gasoline originally referred to any liquid used as the fuel for a gasoline-powered engine, other than diesel fuel or liquefied gas. Methanol racing fuel would have been classed as a type of gasoline.[2]"

*..A GAS is a state of matter.
*..Matter exists in any of 3 states.
*..Solids, Liquids and Gases.
*..Solids and liquids generally expand somewhat on heating.
*..In gases however, the molecules are moving freely and are able to fill any volume presented to them and have a large expansion rate..
*..They have a very low density and viscosity compared to solids and liquids.

(But, why the actual name 'GAS' is anybody's guess. Why 'Liquid', and 'Solid'. They're all terms coined by scientists long ago.
As you say, it's also a shortened term given to Gasoline).
