And if you do think so who will it be in your opinion? There hasn't been a player who ended a season with a 400 Avg or better since ted Williams did it with a 406 Avg.

Possibly, but it will take just the right convergence of circumstances to do it.

- Home park that favors hitters (Coors a favorite)
- Getting JUST enough playing time to satisfy the plate appearances requirement (so, a mid-May callup, or spending some time on the DL (or maybe, bleah, another strike-shortened season))
- Being near the traditional peak age of 27-28
- Excellent at drawing walks

It will require a very rare breed of player, someone with Williams/Bonds class plate discipline. Even then, it'll be someone finishing at .401 or .402, not nearly challenging Hornsby's .424 or any of the 19th century marks.

It's been 65 years, so get comfortable waiting a while longer yet.

No one playing in the majors today will be the one.

Yes, only if for no other reason there is alot of baseball to be played over the next.......forever. In that time somebody will probably do it. No one thought the the consecutive games played streak would get broken, but it did. Records always get broken, just the way it is. Some peole that could do it in our era: Ichiro, Vlad, Albert, Jeter, Even a new guy like Hunter Pence is maintaining a very high avg for a rookie in his first trip through the league. These guys just don't have alot of holes in their swing.

It would be really difficult with the way they play the game today. Years ago players might only see one pitcher every game, but today they have specialty players for every situation. They bring in a left handed pitcher to throw to a left handed hitter, or they will bring in a pitcher that has always had good luck getting a certain hitter out. With that being said, I believe it is still a possibility for someone like Ichiro. For someone to hit 400 he would probably have to be a left handed hitter with great speed and the ability to beat out a significant number of infield hits. He would also have to be a great contact hitter with limited strikeouts and a really good solid hitter. Does this sound like Ichiro, and maybe a few others you can name?

Personally I think it is possible for the same reason as cuba_stl, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon. I think now a days hitters aren,t in being patient, taking walks, and waiting for a good pitch. I think Ichiro would have made if he had been more patient. Also I think if baseball ever adds a salary cap, this will help the hitters chances so a team wont have so many outstanding pitchers that specialize in one catergory.

No, I don't think any player in this generation is cabable of maintaining a 400 average. These day the pitchers are just too good. I beleive that the person with the best chance would be Ichiro.

just a few years ago bonds was 6 hits from hitting 4 hun

so yeah i think it will happen..and remember williams didn't play 162 games that year. then there's the question of the kind of ball parks players played in those years..THEY WEREN'T BIGGER..and many tended to NOT HAVE fences.

you can also question the book keeping...how many were legit hits. and fenway was EVEN SMALLER IN 39..then it is now...so I don't consider williams 4 hun legit.

but that's my opinion.

No

I am old 50
With the travel and TV schedules it will never happen again.
Old days they used to travel on trains.
Rest days were guaranteed. Double headers were done in advance on the schedule.
Today there is too much stress and too much drama in a game.
And if the person is close the media will be the distraction
