I have a betta that has whitish scales that have developed near it's gills, my mom says "it keeps opening and closing it's mouth, and it looks like it has white stuff on the inside of it's mouth." I think she is imagining it, so she can treat them for cotton mouth, but that medicine is not working. She will get pop eye on the occasion. I have tried Maracyn II and my mom has increased the amount salt. I am more concerned about the discoloration of the scales near the gills. I really want to know what this could be and how to treat it. Any ideas???

This may not be any illness at all. In some colors of bettas it's completely normal for the to get some white scales on their gill plates, head and just behind the gills. Unless the scales look fuzzy or really slimy I wouldn't worry at all.

If it is cotton mouth (fuzzy looking areas), it will take about 10 days to 2 weeks to completely cure with Maracyn 2. You will need to keep treating the entire time of course.

If you have any way to upload a photo of your fish and include a link in the additional details of your question it would really help me be sure which situation applies to your fish.

I had this happen to me. I saved the fish. Just do daily partial water changes and add salt. I tried using the meds but the fish seemed to be getting worse. So I just did the water changes and salt thing and b4 I knew it the betta was up and running again. Pop eye was gone and so was the ich and discoloration.
