Nothing really. You get a negative feedback rating, and ebay can suspend or ban your account. But that's about it. Of course, if you like buying stuff on ebay, that's a problem.
EDIT: MBA Don, you cant be prosecuted or sued for fraud. You forget. The buyer does not get the merchandise until it's paid for. They never take possession. It would be difficult to sue for specific performance unless the item was unique and the seller is unable to sell it again. The contract language on Ebay sounds a lot more binding than it actually is. In any event, faillure to pay for an item you have not received is not fraud by any definition.
I use Ebay regularly and have 100% positive feedback rating as a buyer. I pay for my items within seconds of winning them. So it's not an issue for me. But I think I would have a problem with being called a fraud if for some reason I could not complete the transaction, or if I found that I was unable to.

You can back down of a deal easily. If you contact the seller they can cancel your bid if the item is still active. If you won the item you can open a dispute give them an explanation why you dont want it and most likelly they will cancel the deal. You might however get a negative feedback. After a couple negatives your account gets cancel. If you buy a lot from ebay it might be a problem, because whern buying something else some sellers require that you have a good record.

Toodemmo is right, you will get a negative feedback and possibly kicked off of e-bay. If you plan on using e-bay in the future, it will cause you problems. If you have just changed your mind about wanting the item, I would e-mail the seller and communicate with them on the problem your having. Sometimes you get someone understanding and then the whole situation will be resolved without ruining your record.

When you make a bid on eBay, you are entering into a legal contract to buy. Unless there's a good reason such as defective merchandise or never received the item, then you have no legal grounds not to pay unpon receipt of the goods.
eBay and the seller would have the right to come after you legally for the money. In effect, you have committed fraud and basically "stole" the goods you promised to buy.
I recommend:
1) If this is something you really don't want, email the seller right away and ask to cancel. Please realize that the seller has already paid a listing fee with eBay and you have just screwed him. If he's nice enough, he may accept the cancellation. But he is not obligated to do so.
2) Don't think that nothing will happen to you if you don't pay. It's true that if it's a small item, eBay and the seller may not sue you because it'll cost them more to sue... but that's not a guarantee. Imaging even if only 10% of the people on eBay refuse to pay... the company will lose reputation and go bankrupt. That's why eBay may have to come after people who are deadbeats.
