Moot point. One thing they did know, Iraq has a lot of oil. Trying to put reasons for why we are in Iraq is senseless because none of them make sense unless you consider the oil. We are not at war with Iraq nor are we fighting a global war on terror, so that leaves only one reason that makes any kind of sense, oil.

Neoconservatives who led us into this disastrous stewardship of foreign affairs are much to blame for the Iraq Quagmire and the explosive tensions between the Shi'ites and Sunnis wresting for control. The Bush aides' understanding of Iraq is mostly confined to images of Sadam Hussien's goosestep, his genoicidal tactics in handling the Kurds and our apparent victory in eliminating Hussien's deputized force in Kuwait, while ignoring the intracicies of geopolitics in the region. They have been aligning much of their faith in nationalism to be greeted as Iraq's "liberators" but the sad reality is that the Sunnis actually enjoyed Hussein's rule and now are vengeful against what they see as the US acting in its own colonialist interests to encroach on their government and enslaving them for their oil.

Dick Cheney knew at least a little.

"Well, just as it’s important, I think, for a president to know when to commit U.S. forces to combat, it’s also important to know when not to commit U.S. forces to combat. I think for us to get American military personnel involved in a civil war inside Iraq would literally be a quagmire. Once we got to Baghdad, what would we do? Who would we put in power? What kind of government would we have? Would it be a Sunni government, a Shi’a government, a Kurdish government? Would it be secular, along the lines of the Ba’ath Party? Would be fundamentalist Islamic? I do not think the United States wants to have U.S. military forces accept casualties and accept the responsibility of trying to govern Iraq. I think it makes no sense at all."

Who are these planners you are referring to? If they are the war-planners within USA, then their main concern is confined to concentrating on causing cracks in the community there!

Uh - Have you read the history of Islam? If you had, you would probably know that the founding fathers did indeed have relations with Muslims.
