I don't know about average, but a typical range, based on shopping with the various men in my life, is anywhere from 38 to 46 inches around. A slender man may look great and need a 36, but he won't have an easy time finding it.

A 34 to 36 inch for asian men, and 36 to 42 inch for others, asian guys look scarey with bulky chest.
