Three-part strategy:

1. Clean out the junk. Clean your hard drive. (CCleaner is free and good. Windows' disk cleanup--Start, double-click My Computer, right-click on your hard drive, Disk Cleanup button--will help but it won't get everything.) Look for and delete old folders/files. Uninstall programs that you do not use.

2. Clean out spyware. Update and run full-system scans with whatever spyware programs you use. If you do not have any, there are a number of decent ones, free. Go to download.com and search "spyware" and you can filter the listings for license (free) and order them by either CNet editors' rankings or users rankings.

3. Defrag your hard drive. Start, double-click My Computer, right-click on your hard drive, click the Tools tab, and defragment.

Good luck!

click on start, then click on "run." type "msconfig"
when the window opens click on the "startup programs" tab.
look through the startup programs; these are the programs that are running as soon as you turn on your computer and are always running. use google search and type in the startup programs that are unnecessary or maybe "contaminated" or spyware/malware. most of the time the programs are valid but you don't need them running: such as, quicktime, itunes, any help programs. use your best judgement.
2nd: to run sims2 you need adequate rams (random access memory). rams are memory that your computer uses to run the programs whatever they are. each program requires a certain number of available rams; for instance, if your listening to itunes and playing sims2 at the same time your computer is going to run slow because each are using most if not all the available rams. also, windows xp, requires a certain number of rams at all times, which means at any given moment you may be using up all the available rams that the computer came with.
third, check with dell if you have all the available downloadable supports that the computer needs and see if upgrades are possible. if your model is too old you may not be able to upgrade your rams. and certain dell models only allow upgrades to a certain limit.
good luck!

RAM is Random Access Memory, a sort of memory where programs are stored temporarily during the operation of PC. If RAM is less and too many programs are getting loaded (at the start up time), the PC may run slow or crash.

Run a virus check and check for ad-ware, spyware and trojans. Once all such things are clear, keep the minimum needed programs and see whether the performance improves. If needed, add some more RAM chips.

RAM is random access memory. the type of memory to do your ordinary work. as the computer crosses a simple task, it remembers processes and tendencies. RAM is erased once you turn off the computer, but RAM is crucial in your daily workings.

adding more ram will increase the computers capabilities to prcoess. other than that, a fast processing chip would make it go faster as well

By asking a extra designated query. Generally? Add extra reminiscence (RAM) - Windows XP works nice with a minimum of 1GB. If it is an older laptop, (like Nineties), purchase a brand new one. Defragmenting oftentimes is helping. If your tough force's close to complete (cross to my laptop, correct-click on in your tough force, and click on on homes.) If it is more often than not complete, it is gonna be sluggish. Get a higher tough force. If the web's sluggish, get a quicker connection. If you've dial-up, get DSL. If you've DSL, get quicker DSL. If you've quicker DSL, get cable. If you have already got cable, get quicker cable. If you've quicker cable and it is nonetheless sluggish, get DSL!
