I believe the icons near the clock is called "System tray". I understand that all the icons represent programmes which stats running while booting though not immediately required. I have three such icons representing 1) adobe Photo downloader 2) Picasa2, 3) windows messenger. Is it possible to remove these icons, and invoke them later from "START" programme when i really need them if so how to acheve this?

The best place to start is right click on the icon and see if there is an option that says remove or exit. If the icon appears again on startup then open the programme (double click the icon) and look for a options, settings or preferances tab. Look out for "run on startup or show tray icon" Use your head and uncheck anything that means the programme will start the next time you reboot.
Good luck!

If you run Windows XP on your computer, go to Start - Run, type in msconfig (this will open the System Configuration Utility), go to the Startup tab and uncheck the programs you don't want to start when Windows starts. Click Apply, OK and then restart the computer. After restart, you will get a message in a dialog box. Check the little box there to prevent the message to come up every time you start your computer.

Start->Run and type in the box: msconfig
and press OK. Click on the Startup tab.

Scroll down the list and uncheck any item you do not want to run at startup time.

why not just remove the programs as they are free anyway and when you want them download them for 1+2, windows messenger is a built in programe on windows disc so you go to add/remove windows components in the control panel and either tick the box or untick.
