Thinking of upgrading my processor from AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+

Will I have to change anything in the BIOS, or will the driver automatically update over the Internet, or is there some software included with the processor or something?

My OS is Windows Vista h.p

Thanks

Processors are always plug-and-play. Therefore, you wouldn't need to change anything to get it work. Simply change your processor, and boot the PC, start working.

As long as the processors use the same sockets (which in your case they do) there is no need to buy a new motherboard a bios upgrade may be necessary but I doubt it because both of your processors are amd 64 x2's (good choice by the way). The best thing to do is to check with the retailer (or maybe AMD) if bios upgrade will be necessary and even if it is don't give up hope because bios upgrades are fairly simple. Be very very careful when you do upgrade it though, good luck

Well, considering none of the clowns that have so far answered your query have any idea about computers, I'd advise you read the motherboard manual to check that your motherboard can actually handle a 6000+ processor.

If it will, you shouldn't have to make any changes in the BIOS. On all modern motherboards, the CPU (Central Processing Unit, or processor) will be autodetected. There'll be no need to update anything ... unless the motherboard won't recognise the processor. Then, you'll need to flash the BIOS. You should be able to download an updated BIOS from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

The new CPU will just drop in, in place of the old one and the BIOS should pick it up.

The best check you can do before hand is to visit the motherboard manufacturers website and check if any BIOS update is needed.

The one thing to make sure you do is re-fix the heatsink properly. If it is loose in improperly fitted you will have a very expensive ornament in your PC.

Ask yourself though, especially given the power of the processor you already have... Do you really need the extra?

Be careful but have fun
