I have a 1996 Chevy Lumina minivan. A/C worked fine last year but when I turned it on this year, it makes a horrible grinding screaching sound. Very loud. There is some cool air but it sounds so horrible I just turn it off. Any ideas?

Have the drive belts replaced if that is where the noise is comming from. Most likely for less than $50 bucks get a friend to install you will be back cooling again.

Maybe a new belt would fix this, but if it's a grinding sound, your a/c compressor could be going out, that will cost you!

Your a/c clutch is needing replaced. It is usually to get a compressor/clutch assembly because you need a special tool to change the clutch. If you change the compressor, you will need to recharge the system

I am going to place my money on the compressor clutch. Try the belt first and while you are there if you have never replaced the tensioner go ahead and replace it also.

If the belts don't help you need to check the bearings on the compressor.

Could be either of the above causes. Take it to a shop and have it checked out.
