You probably pulled a muscle and that's why you feel such pain. Place a moist heating pad on your back for twenty minutes. Rest for ten minutes then apply an ice pack on your back for ten minutes. Repeat this several times a day.

Advil soft Gel capsules work very quickly on pain. Take them four times daily.

I am a Certfied Athletic Trainer and help college athletes everyday at my University. The type of pain you are experiencing, you said "sharp" is usually the result of a muscle pull or what we call a muscle strain. If it hurts to bend at your waist, more than likely you have a muscle strain. A muscle strain occurs when there is slight or microscopic tears within the muscle due to an ackward movement etc.

It is important however to differentiate this pain from nerve or disk pain. If you have pain that is radiating down into your buttock or lower legs you may have a more serious problem.

The good thing with back problems is that they normally resolve on their own. It would not be a bad idea if your pain lasts for more than a week to see a physician to get a referral to a good physical therapist so you can get a preventative and rehabilitative back or core stabilization program to prevent injuries in the future.

You also want to make sure that you stick to ice for the first 72 hours following an acute injury. By using heat you risk increasing the inflammatory response and delay you healing time. After 72 hours you can alternate ice and heat, you can heat for 5 minutes and then ice for 5min, do this two times ending with ice. You can also do some very light stretching

Single knee to chest: lie on your back and bring one leg at a time to your chest and hold for 20-30 sec 3-4 times

Double knee to chest: same as above but bring both knees to you chest by grabbing behind your knees and pulling again hold 20-30 sec. 3-4 times

Lower trunk rotation: lie on your back with your knees and heels together and slowly drift side to side, hold at the bottom on each side for 20-30 sec 3-4 times.

back injuries SUCK!!

i have had lower back injuries for about 2 years now (I am a gymnast, young athletic, also) and I went to about 6 different doctors who all told me to quit but wouldnt tell me what was wrong with me, and 2 mis-diagnosed me.......but i am still doing gymnastics and now seeing a chiropractor... it is working for me!!!

either see a pain management doctor.....or a chiropractor

I had the same too from a car accident, you have probably strained a muscle. Visit a doctor and am sure he will give you some good advice.
