depends on the jurisdiction. The 1961 suicide act made it no longer illegal to commit suicide or attempt it. Prior to this, if a person committed suicide it was ruled 'unlawful killing' at inquest, and if a person survived the attempt they were tried in court. Now if a person committs suicide it is ruled as 'suicide' at an inquest. Some countries and some states of the USA still treat suicide as an offence however. I dont know why they do it

I think you are mistaken.

While it would be stupid and unreasonable to jail someone for a suicide atempt, it is not generally ignored by authorities.

I'd wager that if the family has the financial resources, the suicidal person is sent to a private hospital for therapy and possible medication.

Lacking that, I'm sure that they are evaluated and treated by court order.

Just because you never see this part aired in public, doesn't mean it doesn't happen...

If someone attempts and fails suicide.....they will be sent, involuntary, to a mental health center. It is illegal. My exwife had to go to one for a month.

I don't understand that law. It is illegal but do you think the person who is going to kill them selves think about the law. It is not as if they are going to get put in jail for 20 years.

Actually, in many jurisdictions, committing suicide and the attempt to commit suicide is illegal.

It is actually attempted murder, even if it is yourself.
