network is WPA2 protected and my laptop is only wpa, will that prevent my laptop from connecting to my network

WPA and WPA2 are different. Actually WPA2 is a "new and improved" version. I am not sure the two are backwardly compatible. WPA2 is a lot more sophisticated and secure and should be used if at all possible.

Check the website of your laptop maker and see if you can upgrade your laptop wireless adapter (usually a firmware or driver upgrade). There is a fair chance that such an upgrade will provide WPA2 ability for you.

As with all upgrades, be sure to follow their recommended procedure for uploading and use a WIRED connection, not wireless connection to the router when you do this.
