I heard that computers, like many electrical appliances, have a so-called "life-span" such that watching too much videos may shorten its usability. How true is that? Thanks!

The pc is an electronic appliance. Properly designed electronic equipment does not wear like mechanical equipment so heavy use does not result in shorter lifetime in general. Contrast this to a tire on a car or an electric motor where the more you use the tire the more it wears.

I am more concerned about the degrading mental effects this has on your mind. The human mind, when not exercised, becomes weak, lazy, and incapable of constructive use. For this reason, I suggest you limit your exposure to the uses you describe - and spend time doing more mentally challenging and mentaly stimulating activities. It will help you academically and professionally because your mind is more capable.
