Flying is the safest way to travel, "statistically". Because less people actually fly than using other modes of transportation, less people die from it. I don't like to fly... it's just not natural. But, it is pretty safe.

I don't believe it's the "flying" that bothers most of them. It's the sudden cessation of flying that is the problem. Plus the fact that if you do crash, the forces are so great it can be difficult to survive. That survivability depends on a large number of factors: the planes type, it's speed and angle of impact, the terrain and many others. Less than 50% of crashes result in fires, so don't believe what you see in the movies. Jet fuel is basically kerosene. All and all, air travel is the safest form of transportation if you consider acidents per passenger mile. Some people do not find statistics reassuring however.

Not Really mostly planes don't crash. I think a plane isn't the safest way. It's not really likely for some to live unless you mean that they jump and use parachutes. People fear flying because either they're afraid of heights or they don't think it's safe on a plane.

Yes, there have been many plane crashes where everyone survived, and many where no one has. They fear it because they think the worst; that they will crash. I have no problem with flying, or heights. In fact, I love to be high up. The only think I don't like about flying is that it hurts your ears (I had to sit right next to the propeller last time.) Some people fear heights because there adrenaline makes them feal like they'll go crazy and jump off.

They don't have a fear of flying -- they have a fear of crashing. Whenever someone says they're afraid to fly, I tell them to look in the newspaper and count the number of people who die that day in car accidents. Then count the number of planes that crashed that day. It's usually something like 15 to 0.

They fear flying because they fear death. Same goes for bungee jumping, parachuting and mountain climbing. The popemobile is the safest way of travelling :) Also, crawling is safer than walking, can't twist your ankles as badly.
