Of course you can, but most lawn mowers have a protective flap of metal or heavy plastic that is intended to protect your feet/toes. When you pull backwards on the mower handle for very long that protective flap usually will flip underneath the mower deck thereby protecting your feet but also mashing down the grass so that the grass will also not be cut properly. You will end up with a ragged mow job. Some mowers do not have this protective flap...don't buy one without it. If yours does not have it then be aware that you have a very old model or a cheapee or it has been broken/cut off by the blade.

I have often mowed a strip backwards in narrow spaces but I turn so I am pulling the mower behind me with one arm. If you have a self-propelled mower be sure to disengage the drive before pulling backwards of course.

Yes, you can pull a lawn mower backwards, as long as isn't a self propelled one.

You can but the back of the blade with hit the grass first and knock it down, so if you make one pass going forward, then one pass pulling backwards, you'll notice a difference in the smoothness of the cut. Also the grass wont be discharged from under the deck as well.

Yes, but I recommend paying someone else to pull it backwards while you stay inside the cool house, drink beer and watch baseball.

Yes, but the cutting edges of the blade won't make contact with the grass, leaving you with grass that has the tops torn off by a blunt edge, not a neat cut. also, watch your toes. :)
