I used to grow it in Ohio. I think I used to pick it around the first or second week of July. But it depends on the kind of growing season you had. The top should be at least starting to die back. Try this website. It should help. Good luck!

In Brittanny the new crops were always ready around the middle of July, so I guess in the UK (depending where you live) a little later than this. On sandy soil they will be earlier than clay.
You can always scrape around the bulb to see how big it is getting!
