expect major damage to forward drum and possible "wiped case" so it's off to the salvage yard for you. these are best changed out by pulling the motor and trans as a unit from the top. [yes it clears the anti-lock brakes and the a/c will have to be disconnected and high pressure line at rt fnt corner [near computer box]unbolted from body and moved out of harms way. depending on model the rt headlamp may need to be removed . REMOVE ENGINE AND TRANS WITH WIRING HARNESS ATTACHED remove computers and remove computer box [wiring position goes one way only and is obvious] don't forget new seals for torque converter and axles and rear main . note at this time water pump and timing component access will never be easier. [while it looks daunting this is actually an easy straightforward job but it is not reccommended as your first engine/trans pull]
good luck purchase a manual and have fun
note i have beaten the repair time givin for transaxel replacement every time including the first time as opposed to supporting engine and dropping sub frame and working from bottom.

I hate to say it but this is what OFTEN happens if you buy older high performance cars. That is why they are so cheap to buy second hand. Someone else has had the best use out of them. They are often false economy. You are talking arm and leg for a new gear box for this car. Sell it.

sell it and get a real car, get somthing comfortable. I drive a six cylinder Commodore(opel) drives great, simple mechanical, tough, strong, and cheap to fix. Volvo? would'nt touch it with a barge pole.
