They first met in "A Study in Scarlet", the first of Sherlock Holmes novels, they had ended up sharing a room in an apartment in 221B Baker Street, and Dr. Watson became curious about his eccentric, violin playing room mate, they soon became friends and the rest as they say, was history.

They decided to share a flat and became friends soon. That is in the first novel in the series.
