First they were colored people, then they were black people and now they're African Americans (as if any of them would ever live in Africa or have even been there).

PC mostly. It's OTHERS telling them that it's 'discriminatory' to be called 'black' or 'colored' (though I must day I don't particularly like 'colored' either)
There was a woman in one of my sociology classes who got very upset at being called African-American - she was quite adamant that she's not from Africa, she's an American. A BLACK American.
If you think that's bad, another woman got up and complained about being called Mexican, Latino, Hispanic, etc. These terms all mean very different things.
Asians do not like being called 'Orientals' anymore either, though there were no 'Asians' in our class to explain why. I think too that some 'Asians' don't like being called Asian either. It's become very difficult to identify anyone by any 'racial' term - well, unless you're white!
Okay, so basically it changes all the time because some are being told it's derogatory & racist, and others find it derogatory to be called African-American. To be on the safe side, I suggest the A-A label unless they take offense.

You see it depends on the person and the way they were raised as well.
I know alot who don't like the term African American so they just say black. I mean they have always lived here as well their parent and grand parents.
So I tend to use that.
I know many people offended by the term colored b/c that was used during slavery so I could understand.
I think it is more of society changing what they are called rather than the race.
We just go by what seems logical to us.

I'm American thanks. And why don't you ask PC idiots in the government who decide what every group is called. It's not like all blacks got together and had a vote concerning what they would be called. Same with Asians who live here, Latinos etc. If you're born in America, you're an American problem solved.

I don't think it's them. I think it's the media that likes to throw out all these "politically correct" phrases, suggested on by one or two activists. Then they talk about it nonstop. The public then embraces it for a while until they get sick of it. Then another, perhaps well-meaning, activist will come along and alert the media to a new supposed injustice and the whole thing starts anew.
I wouldn't blame the entire race for what a few come up with.
