Via evolution they have elongated their 'stupid long necks' to have one of the greatest advantages. They eat and sleep, like almost all other animals...
The point of giraffe's is that they do their bit in the world by having the upper layer of leaves in a tree. :-)

they eat primarily acacia leaves and the foilage of that speices in high up on top in a ball formation following it's long tall trunk.
