I have asked myself that same question so many times.
In life there are some things that we come to understand as time passes by. We must keep in mind that there isn't just one simple answer, these types of things are different for everyone.
So don't be surprised if what you feel that what gives your life meaning isn't the same for other people.
Some live for their careers some for their families and others are content without giving life much thought.
Now when it comes to life and the bigger picture, I think that it's safe to say that certain things are just beyond our reach. No one knows why we are truly here. So we should do what makes us most happy, do good unto others and try to find ourselves along the way.

I think people will give a different answer to this question at different stages in their lives. Right now id say that we live to make the world a better place for future generations

We are searching for meaning in our lives.
Some people will say they live for happiness but happiness is often just busyness that keeps us from thinking about the hard things.
Love gives our lives meaning.

in contrast to ur question, i wanna ask u, Why r we given birth to live for?
We live for we have given birth to this damn earth.
At the begging of our life we need our parents to make us standalone strong enough to all difficulties, and at the middle of our life, we live to support our parents in their oldage....and at the end our life we wait to die in peace....
