Include Unified Germany, West or East. I personally always like Bodo Illgner and for the future Timo hildebrand but whats your thoughts? Turek, Maier, Schumacher, Kopke, Kahn, Lemon, sorry Lehmann?

Germany's one constant over the years has been solid goalkeeping. Sepp Maier, Toni Schumacher, Bodo Illgner, Andi Koepke, Jens Lehmann, Timo Hildebrand...you name them. Germany has a knack for churning out good goalies, which is why they contend year in and year out.

Kahn to me is easily the best, though. He can be abrasive and arrogant to the point that you would rather shoot aomething else at him than a football, but he is clearly the best we've ever had. He also has the intangibles that you look for in a leadr. The expression 'self starter'. That might apply to automobiles, but here we're looking at a rocket, a man possessed by the idea of winning and leaving it all out there on the field.

All you need to watch is the World Cup of 2002, and you'll see what I mean. Kahn singlehandedly got Germany to the finals, depite a so-so squad with a so-so coach (Voeller). I have never seen a goalie have a tournament like that. How ironic that it was his blunder that cost Germany the cup against Brazil!

Sepp Maier, no doubt.

Just remember the game Germany - Holland in the 1974 world cup. The made some fantastic defenses. Germany won 2-1 and for me they weren't the best team but the keeper has outstanding.

We can not forget that he was probably the soccer player with the greater sense of humor. Always joking with team mates, adversaries, reporters,...

He still is a reference for a lot of goalkeepers.

Bert Trautmann, the legendary Manchester City goalkeeper who famously played on in the 1956 FA Cup final with a broken NECK. Imagine today's pansies trying to play on with even a broken fingernail.
