There is no easy answer to your question....
It has already caused a heated debate among the scientists...but the general agreement, is that better nutrition, the use of some additives to meals (iodine to salt, iron to cereals, and certain vitamins like vit "D", to many mutriens are causing in gret part, that modern offspring reach higher stature than their parents...
However, The above statement explains partiallt, the fact that we are observibg, and where ignorance prevails, Theories fluorish...
No gene modification has been detected to explain this fact.
We have appealed to other mechanisms, such as the kind of lifestyle, and different sports, that modern youngsters like to play nowadays...and the higher importance of physical culture that is stressed at schools.....
We have partial explanations only, however the Uppsala University, and the Karolinska University, have researched the subject seriously in the last decade, and no clear or single explanation has been found for this undeniable fact...
The only thing I can assure you, is that NO genetic modification has been found as yet in large series of high stature in their teens (males and females included)
We have a lot of homework to do..on this and many other subjects

People are not evolving to be taller. It is, as others have said, better nutrition.
One thing about genetics and heredity, parents who are better nourished do not pass that on to their offspring. A baby may be born in better condition because the mother had proper nourishment, but that is not genetic.
Genes that will be passed on to the next generation are encapsulated in both male and female animals and will not be changed by parents nutrition.

Due to better health and higher caloric and protein intake, height is not restricted. So we are growing to what our uninhibited height would be. Steroids in food also helps. As does growth hormone.

i think it does have a bit to do with steroids in beef but, all in all...... if you think about your average healthy persons diet(or aleast someone who eats well rounded) it's much better than diets in older days...... there are also vitamins which help growth and not to mention people eat a ton more (which makes some of them girthy like you said but, if you metabolism is fast, then your likely to just grow taller)

My guess would be because of better nutrition. Some gross trivia: apparently a body takes longer to decompose now because of all the preservatives in the food we ingest.
