after three years as a wekend option nurse, with having every 4th wekend off, the hsopital now says we have to work every weekend is this legal

Of course it's legal, as long as they inform you of the change in policy.

Your employer is doing this because there is such a shortage of nurses nationwide and they have to have the coverage 24/7 to care for the patients.

However, from a scheduling perspective, assuming all the nurses are working an equal number of weekends, I don't understand why you would have to work every weekend - it seems they should be able to allow every other weekend off. I would ask your manager if you are working more weekends than the other nurses. It's reasonable to request that you work the same number of weekends as others.

It's quite legal to change your schedule. Your option, if you do not like it, is to find employment in a different area of the hospital, or find entirely different employment.

depending on state laws and your hospitals policys and notifications it could be. check with your administration and have them show you in writing.
