Do you think that Tony actually did get whacked at the end of the last Sopranos episode, or was that just an el mucho lame-o ending to a really great show?

He had to remain alive just in case they ever want to do it again in some form. Tony lives on...viva la James Gandolfini!

He's alive. No motive to kill him left. Phil's death left a power vacuume in NYC, and the families there will be trying to take each other out--not Tony. Nobody in the diner was ever seen in another episode ever, so if you'd like to believe that he was shot by a total no-name w/o a motive as a way of ending the series, be my guest.
And the diner was not Artie Bucco's place. It's not a Soprano hangout. So you have to stretch and believe this guy, who we've never seen before, somehow follows Tony then kills him. Could it happen? Sure, why not. But that dismisses all of Tony's survival skills. Come on! Tony got Phil first, when a ton of people saw it going the other way. Tony's a survivor. If indeed you want to believe that Chase would use a character you've never seen before - not at the New York family hangouts, not flying in from Italy - to walk in on the final scene EVER of "The Sopranos" and cap the lead character without explanation, then so be it.
Everyone seems to think it was the guy who went into the bathroom who comes out and kills Tony. The guy entering the bathroom is a total homage to the Godfather, and Chase wouldn't rip the movie off that badly.

Tony Soprano is suppose to be dead. Cause of that B.S about when you die everything goes black. If that the case it is just a stupid ending. The guy with members only jacket went to the restroom. In the godfather when somebody goes to the restroom to get the gun. WHATEVER I BETTER SEE A MOVIE. Paule is awesome and is Silvio dead. Some many things left in the open.

Everything goes black? Bullshit i saw the episode where they are in the boat and all bobby said is that you probably don't see it coming.....Nothing about it going black!
People are just adding to what bobby said to make it seem like tony died....
But he is well and alive....IMO

I think he got shot in the face as soon as he looked up, which is why the screen just "went black", as Bobby Bacala so eloquently put it a few episodes earlier.
