A laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that is done on an outpatient basis (meaning no hospital admission). It is done with the help of about 2-4 incisions. The first one is where the camera is inserted thru one of several instruments called a trocar.

When the camera is on it will show lighted images on a tv screen that a dr watches as they are doing the surgery (this surgery is also often likened to like playing a video game because of how unique it is). The first incision will be about half an inch long and the other incisions will be about 1/4 inch long.

Depending on the reason for the surgery such as for endometriosis (I've got endometriosis and have had 4 laparoscopies total because of my endometriosis, 1 to diagnose and 3 to check the status of it) they will bring in other instruments thru the other incisions thru trocars placed there to help manipulate certain organs as well as remove things that are found such as with the lesions of endometriosis.

If it is for gynecologic purposes such as endometriosis the dr will also have something placed inside the vagina to help move the uterus around so that they can check all areas for the endometriosis including behind it.

Then after the surgery is done they will close the incisions up (often times with sutures some drs may use Mederma for this instead).

The recovery time depending on what the reason is for it is about 1-2 weeks for an average. But it depends also how much work is done in there especially if it is for endometriosis. If there was a lot of work done with removing the endometriosis it can take longer. It can take up to about 6 months to recover because of the fact that the insides will be quite tender for a while.

As for time off from work I would recommend about a week.

I would also recommend being careful about how much you do even at 8-12 weeks post-op because the insides will still be healing. Also, even if you think you are well enough to do something around the house don't overdo because I promise you it will set you back.

Also, when you come home from surgery you will need someone to stay with you for that first day because of the effects of the anesthesia. Please also eat very lightly the first few weeks after the surgery because your stomach area will be very sensitive for a while. I learned this the hard way after my very first surgery.

If you should notice any gas pains afterward that's because the dr didn't remove all the carbon dioxide needed to inflate the abdomen that allows them to do the surgery. One of the best ways to help this when you feel it in your shoulder is to try some heat to the shoulder and also a bit of walking.

When getting up out of bed or off the couch use your arms to help you get up because the abdominal muscles will be weak for a time because of the surgery.

A bit of bruising may occur as well because of the incisions and the work that went on inside, after the band-aids come off (my dr prefers to take them off herself) try to get some arnica (this is an herbal product that is safe for bruising and comes in liquid form) to help clear up the bruising. You can find it in the health food store if you don't find it in the local drugstore. If you can't find it the drugstore or the health food store check for any Latin markets if you have any in your area because they will often carry this.

Also, the first few days especially rest lots because your body will need it and as far as pain medications please take it as soon as the pain starts, not when you can't stand it. When you wait til you can't stand it it will either not work at that time or take longer for the medicine to work. The best way to ward off that pain is to take the medicine on schedule. Please remember that you have a legitimate need for this medication. Wanted to bring this up in case you were concerned about the potential for addiction.

Please also remember that laparoscopy although classified as minimally invasive because of the incision size is still major surgery so it's important to baby yourself for a spell to give your body time to recover and heal. As for the sex I would recommend waiting about 6 weeks before trying it (others I have talked to that have had sex after a laparoscopy have also said the same thing). Please also check with your surgeon about when it's safe for you to start having sex.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me away from the site.

I had one done in May 2005 to remove a cyst and the ovary it was growing on.

I stayed home for about 4 days. The pain wasn't bad at all. The biggest problem I had was that the painkillers ****** me up. You can substitute whatever narcotic painkillers they give you with 3 ibuprofen. I would recommend that, since the narcotics cause some killer constipation. Not what you need after abdominal surgery!

In a week, I felt almost 100%. After 2 weeks, I was having sex again.

But of course, listen to your doctor above anyone's experience.

You really need to read "Endometriosis Bible & Violet Protocol" by Zoe Brown (also available in electronic format here: http://www.endometriosisbible.info ). It's about how to eradicate endometriosis disease forever. It worked for me, you will see results in only a matter of weeks. Good Luck!

First you wish to have a girl,no longer a lady. Secondly, you have got to be a person,no longer a boy. Thirdly, you each ought to be mature sufficient to take delivery of the accountability. you're proper in it should be actual and pleasant, however you have got to discover the proper individual for this primary,no longer simply any one that needs to make use of you or vice verse to get what they/you wish, the after results will also be disastrous.
