I took an overnight train with a couchette from Warsaw to Vilnius a few years ago. Don't take the train that goes through Belorussia; you might need a visa. In vilnius I stayed in a room booked by the tourist office there that was bed and breakfast in a family's apartment, but I didn't see them at all, just the man who gave me a key and showed me where the breakfast stuff was. I made my own coffee and ate some bread, butter and jam, and it was nice and clean, quiet and cost about $28.
Vilnius is very charming and worth a visit. Interesting streets and architecture, good food, not expensive. I visited the KGB headquarters museum. Interesting. I took a night train to Riga the next night, which was cheap but arrived too early, like 5 a.m.

It is one of three baltic states - Latvia and Estonia are the others - all have been under soviet rule, I think now all have regained independance

I live in Australia, many first generation Australians are from parents of the baltic states, who fled WW2 for freedom from communism
after fighting with Finns against the soviet takeover
