I like it when they talk to the patient not about the patient
I like it when they realize that the patient has opinions and knowledge too
I like being treated like a patient not a disease
I like it when they suggest the "tried and true" methods for treating a problem instead of jumping to the newest ones right away. I do understand why they do it, but I personally don't like it. Example-- I have taken Digoxin, Inderal, and Lasix my whole life. I don't want to switch to a newer medicines. These work just fine for me. I know their side effects and short comings. Way too many young doctors have suggested the "new" drugs. No. Let someone else be a guinea pig for the new meds. I like these. They work for me.
I detest it when doctors immediately start making decisions for me. Discuss it with me first, I have input. I will say yes or no.
And I like doctors who are basically likable people. That factor of likability goes farther than any other in helping me trust a doctor.

Doctors are people. Both I and my daughter, who is a surgical nurse, have a common bond with doctors. I went to a cardiologist for years, he never once touched me or even more then asked how I felt. I had surgery and six bypasses after changing cardiologists. You are right, some are jerks.
We have to remember doctors are people too. Some think they're Gods gift to mankind. Some won't touch the human body, just look from a distance, we've had this happen. My wife with a rash, the doctor couldn't speak English, or wouldn't, stood across the room and gave a diagnosis, I refused to pay the bill.
They are protected by the AMA like Gods, which is wrong, they should pay for their ignorance like everyone else however long they went to school.
When they make mistakes they should be brought to bare for them and pay. Now you can't even sue a doctor that makes grave errors in judgment.

my honest opinion is not to become a doctor. look, you are already worrying about how people feel about doctors and I can't imagine what you will feel when a patient tell you that you are wrong because they read about it in Yahoo Answers.
being a doctor is not what it used to be. I know because I am a practicing doctor and is married to one too. Look again, my life sucks so bad that I am answering questions here in my free time when I should be writing letters to insurance company to pay me or dictating office notes to cover my behind so I can prove to the government that i indeed saw the patient and also so that the patient will not take me to court. I should also be answering the pager because the nurse in the hospital gave wrong medication to the patient and is asking me what to do when she is the one that screwed up.
Life is grant ! Enjoy it while you can. dont stress over it. Medical school is the best time I ever had. Of course I met my wife there.

I think that they are useless to me unless I have something broken or some kind of very serious injury. I hate going to the doctors, but sometimes I go because I cant stand the pain anymore. one situation was I just started my new job and I had some bad chest/heart pains. I ignored it for a while until I started loosing sleep and then by about the 3rd night of no sleep and having a very difficult time breathing I had my buddy take me in, after hours of tests they found nothing and then told me it was heartburn and then the doctor left, with me still in pain,. I know it wasnt heartburn and I told him that but he still just left. I admit im not the best at explaining symptoms but It was just bad pain and it hurt alot worse when i lay down. I went to the nurses station and asked if i could at least get something for the pain cause i really needed sleep and was mostly what I was concerned with and they finally gave me something. The only time I had something productive get done in a hospital was when I had stitches in my leg.
Also I dont like how all of a sudden all these kids are getting medicine for ADD I see some kids that are on it and it is all just a discipline problem, which you see by how their parents handle them and they get the pills cause they dont want to deal with them. But not putting down doctors I know they are hard working and have for the most part very long hours.

I like that they have the authority to run tests and can communicate to you what the results are. And, sometimes they actually know what tests to order (though, that really depends on the patients ability to communicate to them and their ability to hear above the noise of their busy schedule).
I hate that they lean on Prescriptions heavily without first using more natural or common sense methods like changing diet, excercise, vitamins, or supplements. I hate that they assume you know what they are talking about, give you only a few minutes with them, and thus really leave you wondering what in the world they expect you to do next. Most of their communication skills suck, so you got to wonder if they understood what your symptoms were enough to make an educated guess as to what you might have or what test to send you to.

I like doctors that are willing to be human and
compassionate and treat their patients with respect as humans and give them full disclosure and information about what their medical problems are and the choices of how to handle them. What I dislike most about them is that they are too rushed and overworked and have a tendency to distance themselves and act removed. It is vital that doctors listen to their patients. Go see the movie "The Doctor" with William Hurt and it will answer your question. Thanks for asking your question. It is a sign that you care enough to become a humane doctor.

I think doctors are over paid for the services you receive like that woman in California who dropped dead in the emergency room waiting area. They waited so long and she puked up so much blood her husband called 911 from the emergency room.

I like doctors who know what they are doing...find the problem and fix it...
I hate when they make you pay to come back for normal test results...just tell me, everythings normal on the phone.
