Alan Knott by a long way. The guy did the keeping part beautifully. Just watch those "Ashes Legends" on ESPN/Star.
Also he did manage more than enough with the bat too.
Alec Stewart may come in 2nd.

Bob Taylor was probably the best Keeper. Since Alec Stewart the selectors have opted for a wicketkeeper/Batsman.

From what I've heard, Alan Knott was great- but since I haven't been alive to see any of his glovework, I have no idea what to make of him!

The best in my lifetime would be Alec Stewart- a save pair of hands behind the stumps, and and a wizard with the willow! I fact, when he wasn't chosen as a keeper, he was a useful bowler in bad light!

I fully agree with you. Alan Knott has been the best wicket keeper for England. He has effected 269 dismissals behind the stumps from 95 test matches with 250 caught and 19 stumped.

I haven't been around to see some of these wicket keepers you mention but from what i've heard its Alan Knott or Alec Stewart.

the best i've seen is Matt Prior (for dealing so well with Harmison and Plunkett's wides)

yes Alan Knott was one of the greats. He faced stiff competition from Jack Russell, and Jack Richards. The all time greatest is widely believed to have been Godfrey Evans.

Its a close run thing for me between Knott, Alec Stewart and Jack Russell.

On balance I think A.P.E. Knott, and not just because I found his initials hilarious as a young boy.
