I want to work as an Aupairmädchen ( girl who stays in Hostfamily, helping with the houseworks and studying language in another country) next year. Any of you who did this job and can share with me some helpful experiences ?
(like what should i bring ...how should i behave in the family...what sort of family should i choose...how much you get for a month...travelling and holiday...)
thanks a lot.

Be sure to use a agency that has a good reputation, and try to have several contacts in the country you go to besides.

My sister in law came to the Netherlands as Aupair and had a few bad experiences, but as she knew a family here she did not have to suffer but could speak out and get a different house.

From her experiences I would say: Expect long hours, little pay, little freedom and a lot of responsebility.
But I have talked with many girls who have been aupair and had a very good time, were treated as part of the family and are still in contact with their host families, after up to 40 years!!

Your agency should be able to tell you about the pay (different for each country, but expect pocket money rather than pay,) and the hours you should work, as well as the number of days of and holidays.
For things to bring:
Photos of your loved ones, basic clothing for year round, (jeans, T-shirts, sweaters, winter coat and raincoat or light jacket) and take money or have money send to you if you find that the pay is not enough to cover extra clothing you need. Music player with your favourites, (CD or MP3 or so,) and a radio. Some small things that make your room home, like your old teddybear, a souvenir from your old schoolmates or cousins/nieces.

Most girls stay in a family with young children, but the best experiences I have heard about was from a girl who was basicly a companion to an eldery lady.

If you really want to learn the language, try to get that arranged before you leave for your new home, as many language schools start just one time a year and you need to be near a school.
(In a town like Paris or London that is not a problem but if you live in a small town well away from a city, school might be imposible.)
