There are doubtless records of people going back thousands of years, but are they really remembered.
For example Ramses II of Eqypt is a well remembered pharaoh from the mists of time. There was obviously a Ramses I, but is he really remembered at all.
From a western point of view the earliest remebered people are likely to come from ancient greece or egypt as these were the most developed societies and consequently people from these ages are more likely to have passed their reputations down through the ages.
people such as socrates, aristotle, plato, alexander the great or his father phillip.
from egypt the first known pharaoh was Narmer from approx 3100 yrs BC.

We know a lot about David, and yes recent archaeological work strongly supports his existance.
Before him would be figures such as Hammurabi, Sargon, etc. Who we know mostly from their accomplishments. The real problem with looking this far back into history is that it becomes harder and harder to verify whether many of these people existed, due to the lack of evidence surviving for some of the really old figures.

Hammurabi is up there, but since human history goes back a few thousand years before that, I'd say it would be the Mesopotamians and the Egyptians.

i think someone wrote an interesting book about this, if ANYone knows the title...
at first i thought, gautama buddha. he's from hundreds of years before christ, 563-483 bce... or socrates, 470 bce.
but then i looked up moses! although archaeologists can't prove he existed, they date the exodus at 1400 bce! and, i know for jewish and christian history he was well remembered.
course, that first king of egypt definately beats moses.
