Entirely disagree with Spike about England being a great place to live and USA not being on the list. I have been around the world and England comes way behind USA, France and Holland. Culture is awful, NHS is useless and the standard of service and care is very low and over-stretched, people are unfriendly, cliquey and care about themselves entirely, very small and standard of living lower than most developed countries.

Good Points: Almost entirely government funded education system, very good public transport links, pound sterling and investing, beautiful countryside and history, proximity to Europe and the capital, London.

With England, all the bad points outweigh the good points. All the advantages of England are mostly material and financial. Society is a disaster, feral youth, benefits culture and obscenely high taxes. Some of the worse schools in the EU might I add.

The USA is one of the greatest countries in the world for business success, achievement in all areas, academic, sports and drama. Culturally, geographically and ethnically diverse. People are warm, friendly, accepting and helpful. Reward and admire success unlike their English cousins. The sky is the limit if you want to get an education, work hard and do your best. Healthcare and education is not free but the service and standard is unrivaled when you are paying for it. Large houses, big roads, good social amenities. Also freedom to move to any state or city of your choice. Less racial and social prejudice compared to other European nations.

I have also been to Europe many times. France is the dream if you can speak French, have a good job and prepared to learn a new culture. Economy is not the best compared to Germany but good enough. The culture and sophistication in France is amazing. I would love to live in Europe but the language and work opportunities are the only problem,

England cannot come close to the USA in all areas nor France, Germany or Holland. It is no match. It is too small, not enough jobs or opportunity, society is not welcoming or friendly let me tell you that, very expensive and have to live in tiny houses and usually have to park on the street. The benefits of England is all material and whatever comes out of paying very high taxes. No wonder most people leave England, go to London or end up on unemployment or benefits and jobs that go no where. Everyone is leaving England that wants a good and rewarding future and other nations come in for the benefits and higher wages.

England is actually at the bottom of the pile in most areas. I would recommend London if you want a good job but it is overcrowded, very high crime rates, sky high rent and living there is an expensive nightmare.

Just my personal experience of seeing the world. I would pick the USA as top. Lots of good work opportunities, friendly and open society and culture, standard of living is a lot greater, healthcare and education can be a problem but not that much, lots of choice and freedom in everything. I have had a lot of very fun, wild and interesting vacations here. Europe is very nice but not as fun and rewarding as the USA.

England is an AMAZING place to live.

1. It's people are down to earth and realistic - they don't expect everything on a plate and can take criticism (just watch American Idol lol)

2. It's relatively low crime (most police don't carry guns)

3. Taxes could be lower but they're not too bad.

4. Anyone can start a business and make money here.

5. It mostly accepts all cultures (not like America with it's generally segrated nature) I live in Bristol and English people work happily alongside Indians, Iranians, Australians, Europeans, Japanese. - It likes hard working immigrants, not ones' along for an easy ride.

6. It has such a mix of countryside, beach resorts and cities.

7. We are a much more free society than the US, and nowhere near as politically correct.

I could go on and on, but one thing, any english people on here criticizing our country need to get a grip or stop moaning like old duffers.

I've been lucky enough to travel the world over the last 25 years and i would have to say that England ( or parts of it ) easily outranks anywhere else. Everyone harps on about the USA but mostly its people who have only ever been to Disney or never been at all and believe its like what is shown in the movies. Once you have been a few times you relise you wouldn't live there to save your life. One of the best places to live because of a high standard of living is Holland but the only place i would move to is France. The whole way of life is much better there. My top five are
1 France
2 England
3 Holland
4 Canada
5 New Zealand

If you had been able to ask the question 40 years ago , I would have said it is a beautiful free country. That was then though, today we are the most watched people in the world, we are spied on and we are governed by a dictatorship, although one that was voted in by the young fools who believe the lies and spin that they are fed. These same people will thumbs down my answer because they are brain washed into political correctness. If I could afford it I would be off like a shot from the country I fought for but has now been swamped by aliens and illegal immigrants. They have no love for this country which has been destroyed by the liberals . Scotland although still part of the Union, hates England although they are getting a substantially higher amount spent on them from the English tax payers. This cannot go on and we will see the break-up of the UK sooner rather than later.

I live there and it has good and bad points, although the bad outweigh the good!
Good:
Free health care
Get paid a bit more than the states, and you get more vacation time
Has fantastic history

Bad:
House prices are at least double of what you would pay in the States - and you definitely get more house for your money in the States too
Fuel is expensive
Taxes are high
Basically it's a VERY expensive country!
The weather is terrible - it rains for most of the year
The justice system is the biggest joke around and is almost non existent - honestly, what other country would suggest that paedophiles and sex offenders don't go to prison?!
It's over run with immigrants as they let anyone in
It's also over run with "chavs"
1/2 the population is as miserable as hell
Service in shops etc is terrible
The road systems are horrid

I could go, but I think you get the idea!!!

hi Jon... As an English man or woman raised with the aid of Irish immigrants in 70's uk I do have faith that Immigrants have better the financial device. If any human beings right here have worked in different countries as I even have in view that... it particularly is like putting forward the bleeding obtrusive ...that immigration helps the financial device. human beings would themselves have matters with it yet there would properly be no disputing the undeniable fact that economies advance from importation of labour thats extra low priced than the the natives might decide for to be paid.

i think we are very lucky in the UK. i lived in the USA for 2 years. i did have a good time, but felt my life in UK more relaxed and easier. my American relatives agree!

i now really appreciate the following;

Not having to shell out money to visit the doctor(i had insurance but still had to pay cash per visit)

public transport readily available, none in the town i lived in!. i had to ask for lifts all the time, which i didn't like to do!

i get 4 weeks holidays and 10 monday hols in my job here. i got 2 weeks in USA,and was really tired and stressed.

UK is not perfect of course, but i was relieved to get back and be able to jump on buses,go to the dr when i am broke,go on holidays and have long weekends with all the monday hols!
last year i hurt my leg,i was off work for 3 months on full pay,so i am glad of that security as well.

i also earn more here, doing the same job!

edit; i am just saying what I experienced, maybe other people have had completely different experiences

I dont think its too bad. You have to appreciate what you have. When I think of the amount of dangerous countries I could have been born in like Israel or Iraq, where its all bombs and war. Too many people in England whine about taxes and stuff but they really are spoilt and dont realise how lucky they are. Generally the police do a good job, theres good education and health, I like it!
