There are NO formal minimum requirements to the position of computer game designer. The MAIN requirement is experience as producer, having produced at least a few AAA-class titles, so that you know the industry in and out, AND you have some ideas that you can pitch to the management, then your title changes from producer to designer.
There are no magic classes you can take that'll guarantee you a job as a computer game designer. Heck, you don't need a degree to design Arkanoid, or Tetris, or variations on Space Invaders. You don't necessarily need to know programming or art or both, but it sure would help if you *do* know both. After all, who can best implement your ideas but you?

If you're talking about designing the current hardcore amazing games. You need a computer science degree. This requires very strong calculus skills including vector calculus. You need to know C++ like the back of your hand.
Check out various game company websites and look at what they are looking for in new employees.
If your talking about the artistic side, you have to break into graphic design. It will require a lot of art classes.

"Game Design" means project management: the designer analyses the requirements, divide the project into tasks that he/she gives to various specialists: artists, 2D artists, 3D artists, and coders. Your girls need to be proficient in at least one of these fields to have a chance to become part of a team. To be the team leader, they need to have an excellent grasp of ALL these techniques, the intricacies of computer networks and multiusers systems. Not an easy target. If they are good at "drawing" (the artist's side), download something like Blender (free) and learn how to design in 3D. Find 3D games on the net, find their designers and contact them!
