It's crazy, so many people put apostrophes in the wrong places, spell badly, or use caps where they're not needed. The internet is a public arena - shouldn't publishing be taken seriously?

Laziness combined with the impersonal, anonymous quality of the internet. You don't really know who the person is who is stating something. They're never going to be found out if they do not want to be, so they do not care what they say or how they say it. I guess a complete lack of self respect also factors into it all. Some might argue it is stupidity, but I feel [short of injury or damage to the brain] no one is any smarter than anyone else. It is just that some of us acquire more information for our brains to store as knowledge than others do. Again, those who don't are just too lazy.

Not many people learn how to type. I never learn how to type but I try to spell correctly. Yahoo came with a free spelling checking click but sometime it don't work. Pity it can't do any grammer checking. Not many people use English as their main language. I myself is a Chinese and beside working, I speak Chinese at home. I try to improve by typing more. I believe many people are doing so. Even some English people have poor English knowledge. Did you watch The America next Top Model? Some girls there can't even spell some basic words. And they are suppose to be better in English than other people, relatively speaking. So, as long what was typed is understandable, I think it is okay. Many people used short forms, like the word to be is replace by 2b. It is bad to always use it, especially if the person who type those are very young as they will end up making it a bad habit. But as a grown up adult, they should know better and they will not use it in daily life, but perhaps only in typing in Blog and here.

Anyway, it is human ways to try to type fast and end up typing mistakes. So, they should be forgiven, unless they purposely type badly and the sentances makes no sense. You should be abel to find a few of those here. So sometime we wanted to reply them their questions but we can not understand what they are asking. What a pity and a big waste of the points. lol... Oops... and lol means Laugh out Loud....

The fact is that it just isn't taken seriously. People with little or no education can access the internet just as easily as the rest of us, and they do so proudly.
Also, I can't help but wonder if many people forget what they learned in elementary school because it's almost "trendy." Everyone does it. You can read forums with post after post of bad grammar.
But I'm not sure what you mean by "shouldn't publishing be taken seriously?" The internet isn't REALLY "publishing," which is exactly the problem. Publishing IS taken seriously. The problem is in your question-- it is a public arena.

Some just lazy, some don't care, some don't have good grammar and spelling skills, especially the kids. The internet is also anonymous, and a lot of people don't care what they do online.

Yes, it should. Though, bad grammar and spelling has become a tradition on the Internet. It's too bad, in my opinion because when you work so hard to break the rules your teachers taught you, you are going to do it when it's important, and you're shooting yourself in the foot. Say, isn't that a run-on sentence. Hooboy, I've fallen victim to the habit...

quite often it's because the person typing is thinking too fast and then doesn't proofread what's been written before sending it. Also laziness comes into it as well as "mobile phone language". Half the time I can't read it because of the u r @ etc. The words don't register when I first see them. It's like a puzzle to work out what's been written.

I don't think so, I mean its not like we need to be professional or any thing...... but I understand the bad spelling .....some times you don't even know what the word is supposed to be.

If people make any mistake, please do correction if pssible for you. It will help the writer and the reader both. in fact, most of the people might be writing in hurry or they might be poor in this language. I think mistakes can be ignored if you understand the message .So you have to bear.
