Jumps and motion technique are good to walk into tryouts with. Tumbling is always a plus, but not always required. Ask your coach what you need to know to make the team.

It depends on your squad, the amount of people you tryout against(which determines squad size on many occasions), and the level you compete at. Some squads you will need tumbling skills such as; front walk overs, back walk overs, hand springs, etc.(but generaly nothing less like cartwheels they don't care too much about in most cases). Jumps you should at least know a toe touch which you may be able to look up online but they will probebly show you how to do that at the tryout if they want you to do that. You needto always remember to smile and make it believeable. There will most definently be times you don't want to be there but you really have to make it seem like you do. You also have to have a loud projecting voice and be strong with your words but don't scream. Drop your voice a little lower, cheerleaders don't sound all that girly. You also have to be able to memorize well and be really sharp/tight with your motions in cheer/dance routines. You also need to be able to fallow directions and be alert and aware of your surroundings so that no one gets hurt. Cheerleading is dangerous(I've been hopitalized for cheer stunt injuries). That's all you should really need to know for high school. It depends on how competative your school is in cheer as far as how hard your tryouts would be and your exact requirements. Most things they'll show you at tryouts(most likely a routine and a few jumps and they may ask you to show off your tumbling skills). Be sure to have fun with it. Just remember, good cheer coaches are tough and you have to put up with a lot of crap from them. Just grin and take it.

If you are thinking about trying out for your cheerleading squad, you might want to find out what is required to make the squad. Some squads require certain tumbling skills to even be considered for the squad. You could go to a high school basketball or football game and ask a cheerleader what the requirements are. Cheerleaders are usually outgoing so asking shouldn't be hard for you. If you're not already taking a tumbling class, you should enroll because tumbling is basic for cheering. You'll need to be able to memorize cheers or dance moves quickly. Make sure to smile, smile, smile, and be loud to stand out to the tryout judges!

Know how to do basic stunts.
You have to be pretty strong. (strong enough to support ones weight with two hands)
You have to have a LOUD voice that carries.
Your words have to be define and you need to have lots of energy.
You have to ALWAYS get enough sleep. Although this may seem "odd" to say, cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports. One slip of your hand or foot anytime in a stunt can be fatal for you and others.
You need to be aware of actions going around you.
You need to have good memorization skills.
