Philosophy has a collection of meanings. To put it simply though, philosophy is concerned with the system of ethics, therefore how a person should live morally, developing a structure of correct reasoning, the different kinds of things that exist in the universe and what makes it so, and lastly, what counts as genuine knowledge.

Actual philosophy, invented by Socrates
philo- love sophia-wisdom
philosophy, in it's purest sense, means love of wisdom. All wisdom. Anything you can do, experience, observe, ask about, etc. This means everything from contemplations on life to biology, to athletics.

Today philosophy has been watered down into this basic question, "What is the purpose of man, and how does he fit into civil society?"

Any question you can pose about politics, virtue, the soul etc. can be brought back to that question.

Phil = love
soph = wisdom

Therefore, philosopher literally means, a lover of wisdom.

And as I said in another philosophy question, people get degrees in all kinds of subjects... a degree proves you have knowledge and maybe even some understanding of a matter.

Wisdom is what you do with what you know. And learning what to do with what you know comes ONLY by life's experiences. Anyone who loves learning - or who simply learns by accident, because he or she loves living - can be considered a philosopher.

Philosophy is certainly a "love of wisdom," but it is also a human attempt, in the face of being dead wrong, to ask a new question.

as people have answered before me - it means a lover of wisdom.

"Philosophy is the discipline concerned with the questions of how one should live (ethics); what sorts of things exist and what are their essential natures (metaphysics); what counts as genuine knowledge (epistemology); and what are the correct principles of reasoning (logic)"

Counter to others:

It is not easy because your answers to questions MUST be argued - you cannot just 'dream up' answers (as some have)

It is not stabling around in the dark but bathing in the light of reason.

Superior to theology because it does not start with unquestioned premises.

...and it is not about opinions.

A philosopher is a blind man in a dark cellar at midnight looking for a black cat that isn`t there.He is distinguished from a theologian,in that the theologian finds the cat.
