this is what happened. 2 weeks ago i had to reset my packard bell easynote r4622 windows xp sp2 to factory settings using the recovery boot disk i created from it a year ago. halfway through the recovery, something went wrong and it said that some files on the disc are missing and the laptop went and stuck in dos mode. now whenever i turn it on, all i get on the sceen is microsoft windos 98 followed by C:\> waiting for a command. i got the proper master recovery cd's from packard bell. i have tried these discs but the dvd drive won't read them and it just returns to the dos screen again. when i went in to the bio system and selected to read the discs, it says there is no bootable disc in the drive. i have also tried this with the original recovery disc and norton ghost bootable disc and that's all it keeps saying. i have put these discs in to my other laptop and there is nothing wrong with the discs as they all show ok. i have a usb dvd rom drive but won't work. any ideas?

When you boot into MS DOS, you don't have access to your CD ROM because the drivers are not in the configuration file that loads DOS.
Most CD drives if bought independently use to come with a 3.5" floppy which enabled the drive in DOS.
If not, look for the brand name of your drive online, and basically search for Dos drivers and hopefully you'll find some instructions there too.
I think there is also commands to enable DOS to copy the drivers off the CDs which if you search hard enough you may also find.I can't remember them off the top of my head.

What was the letter given to the CD drive? Then with the C:\ on screen type after the - C:\cd drive name - and enter the prompt should change to this drive and then the discs should be able to be read. Put the disc into the drive before typing the above.

I would recommend using an original Windows XP SP2 CD. Make it boot into DOS mode, insert the XP SP2 CD in and on the prompt type in "cd \(Driveletter):" and then type in "(driveletter):\Winnt.exe"
Or if that doesn't work, copy the entire contents of a Windows XP SP2 CD to a USB Drive and you can run it from there.

make sure boot from cd is before boot from HDDrive in bios
and then once you are back to normal, restart the Ltop go back into bios and make >boot From HDDrive first, then boot cd/dvd drive second, also on desktop pc's when you switch on or have restarted the pc,just press and hold either f8 or f9
one of the two anyway.a option screen appears with things like [start in safe mode, start in safe mode with network only
and LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION,Select this option if you see it,and press enter.

my mother-in-law had exactly the same problem with her packard bell. we tried the disks they would not work, we phoned them they tried remotley, that did not work. they sent out new recovery disks, they did not work. luckily the computer was insured and it is now back with P.C. World being fixed. this was the only way it could be done. best of luck.

type
format c:
at the command prompt. This will completely remove all current files from the hard drive.
Then try again first with your disc.
Good luck.

If your laptop is new ... it would have a feature to boot from usb devices ... try to copy the OS to a flash memory, and try to boot from it .. it might work eventually
