The suanpan of the Chinese dates from the Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 184 CE).

However, it rose to prominence during the Yuan Dynasty (1271 CE - 1368 CE).

The abacus was invented between 1000 BC and 500BC, and was first used in Mesopotamia and China. The first one was a flat stone covered with sand or dust, and words or letters were written in the sand. It wasn't till later that numbers and beads were added. The word comes from "abakos", the Greek genitive form of "abax" (calculating table). A tablet found in 1846 on the Greek island of Salamis dates back to 300 BC, the oldest one known in existence so far.
