I think the nursing home requires all residents to be tucked in by 10:00 so he had to get home. :)

He'd thrown 108 pitches by that point. Considering his age and the fact that he still hasn't pitched a great deal this season, I believe Torre wasn't comfortable with getting too far above the 100-pitch mark.
This is why, over the past couple of seasons, Roger doesn't finish games and usually goes about six.

He's old and tired. I'm sure his pathetic contract says something that once he gets over 100 pitches, he must be given a glass of lemonade between batters, and Torre's just too beaten down to walk out to the mound that many times a game.

I don't know. Torre has a way of taking the pitchers out too soon. He could have just let Roger pitch to one more person and see what happened. He was already losing and the Yanks weren't hitting so it didn't matter. Although his reliever was ok.

his arm isn't what used to be and his legs for sure aren't the same either, throwing over 100 pitches in a game takes a lot of energy. you already throw about 100 pitches in the bullpen warming up, so the yankees probably wanted to save his arm so he can pitch quality games the rest of the year

Must've been Clemens' "fatigued groin" acting up.
He could've pitched all 9, but they still couldn't score any runs for him...

Torre is no fool. you have to relive the pitcher BEFORE he makes a terrible mistake.
