Cattails provide an effective defense against erosion, they filter runoff into the pond, they provide a habitat for numerous birds, and other animals, and most of the plant is edible. You should not eradicate them, maybe you could just cut some of them back.I guarantee you will mess up the ecosystem of the poind if you eliminate them.

I have an idea; How would you like to make some money- off those cattails??! It turns out- a LOT of gift & craft shops SELL those things- to women who use them for interior decorating. You might want to check around at places near you- & see if any of them might be interested. You ALSO might want to see if anyone on ebay would be interested in taking a load of them off your hands... I've seen STRANGER stuff than THAT on there- making money for people! :)

Muskrats . No joke! That's how waterfowl refuges do it.(Monteczuma NWR, Seneca Falls,NY, for ex.) They regulate the number of muskrats .

I asked the same question yesterday & it's still open...

Let me know if you get any answers that are better than the ones that I got!

Good Luck!
