On a map, 1/3 inch equals 15 miles. The distance between two towns on a map is 3 2/3 inches. How many miles are actually between the two towns?

The scale is : 45 miles per inch on the map.
So 3 2/3 is 3*45 (= 135) + 2/3 * 45 (= 30) = 165

The answer is 165 miles.

Make a proportion. The miles you want is x. The proportion is inches to inches equals miles to miles.
(1/3)/(3-2/3) = 15/x
(1 /11) = 15/x
x=165 miles
