You don't ever have to see a gynecologist or any doctor, for that matter. No doctor can treat you, or even touch you, without your consent. All your medical decisions or entirely up to you.
There's no need to see a doctor just because you've gotten your period. Menstruation is normal. The recommended age for seeing a gynecologist is 21 (not 18!) or three years after first sexual intercourse. But again, it's just a recommendation. No one can make you see a gynecologist any more than they can make you get your cholesterol checked.

Well, I was 12 or 13 for my first one. And have had about 5 since.
It's not a have to kind of thing, but it's a VERY IMPORTANT thing to do as a woman. Paps are what gynos do to make sure you don't have cancer(s) or infection(s) or disease(s).
What you do is slip on a hosp. gown, lie down on the table thing, put your feet in the stirrups, spread eagle, and she/he sticks a speculum up there and opens it (not very wide). She/he will take some samples to be sure that everything is going alright up there and that you don't have any cancer or infections or diseases. Then they pull it out and you're done.

No one can MAKE anyone go to the doctor/gyno...its a choice, thats why we live in america.
Most docs recommend that you start going whenever you become sexually active or turn 18, whichever happens first. Its really important, especially if you are having sex. Its not the most pleasant thing, but its fine...and its for your own health, what is more important??

I don't think women are forced to go, but you should. It can be uncomfortable, but you should go once a year. Not sure about an appropriate start age, though. I would say sometime in your early 20's for sure.
There are no gyno police checking up on you. I think after my mother had her last baby in 1979 was her VERY LAST TIME TO GO, so...................but she should.

Once you start your period you are old enough to start going. Most don't go unless they feel that there is some type of prob. Once you are sexually active you should go yearly. You should be tested for STDs, esp. if you engage in unprotected sex. If you have any history or breast, ovarian, cervical, or uterine cancers in your family, yearly would be a good idea. Also don't forget to start doing your self breast exams monthly. Good Luck.

I went after I first started menstruating at age 11.
IMO a girl should go get a pelvic exam BEFORE becoming sexually active. One reason to get checked before you have sex, and the other reason to get on birth control (which requires a pap smear).
You don't HAVE to but you SHOULD to ensure the health of your reproductive organs.

It's a very good idea to do it. I'm surprised people here have been going since they were 11/12...here it's only recommend if you're over 18 or when you're starting to have sex.
