hi there! a friend of mine lives in a big house and has a wireless connection (on his notebook) but the signal strength is low. Will a linksys wireless access point / router help strengthen the sigal? The main network is in a separate building. Any suggestions?

Linksys is diffidently a good router to go with. I would go with a linksys router if I was him, but if he wants to, a nice little option is to go with a air card from somewhere such as Verizon wireless. With this, your friend can take his laptop into his house and get on the Internet. Then he can run to the park or wherever and get on there too. It's nice and extremely convenient and it gets signal from the Verizon's towers. If your friend doesn't want to spend his money on that or just doesn't really need or want to use his laptop anywhere besides his house, that linksys router will solve his little dilemma. Hope this helps!

Well I have no argument that Linksys is a good router BUT like all the off the shelf routers it has only limited power available for your location.

There are other companies that make HIGH POWER routers designed for larger areas of coverage. Many of them have 400mw transmitters which are 10 times the power of Linksys. So one of them would give better coverage. Just do a search for HIGH POWER WIFI ROUTER and you will find several companies with really good coverage units.

Those same companies have high power Cards for the laptops also.

signal strength depends on how far the computer is from the wireless router/access point. by 'in a separate building' you mean someone else's wireless, then there is not much your friend can do without getting their own wireless router and network to hook it to.

You should consider getting a wireless repeter. It will strengthen you signal significantly.

for the signal strength you could try to get an external antenna to boost reception on the laptop.
as far as the router to boost sig wont happen.
for that you need a repeater
