A ship is hollow but the iron ball is solid. This means that the ship will displace water equivalent in weight to to its structure and load. If water does not then come over the sides, the ship will float. The Iron ball will have a weight greater than the volume of water displaced and will sink.

It's because the Archimedes buoyancy law: the weight of the volume of water displaced equals the weight of the floating object. The remainder water under the displaced water will push up as it used to do it before the displacement, so it doesn't matter if it is a water volume or a ship as long the weight it's the same.
So if you know the total weight of a ship, you only need to design the shape of the bottom so it will displace a volume of water which its weight will equal the weight of the ship.
The iron ball just sinks because the shape at the bottom (half of a sphere) will not displace enough water to equalize its total weight.

Ships have much more surface area than an iron ball, and their mass is spread over a larger volume. Therefore the pressure of the water against the hull is greater than the weight of the ship, and the ship floats.
Remember, water pressure increases with depth, so the keel of a ship will sink until the pressure of the water on the hull is great enough to support it's mass at a stable depth.

Ships, especially those made of steel, enclose sufficient air that their total density is less than the density of water. Put another way, any object placed on water will sink until it displaces a weight of water equal to its own weight. If its volume is insufficient to displace an equal weight of water (like an iron ball) it will continue to sink.

ship is made of wood & the density of wood is less than water so wood floats on water & where as iron ball is heavy & has density more than water !!
