What will work for your tank will depend somewhat on your lighting. Also if you plan to use a CO2 injection, but this might be more than you want to get into at this point.

Some plants that seem to do well for everyone that don't need a lot of light are Java moss and Java fern. You can plant the fern and attach the moss to a piece of driftwood with a piece of string about the same color as the driftwood, so it will blend in. By the time the string rots, the moss will have attached to the wood and will grow over it. I also like Anubias. See these links for more about the kinds of plants you see in pet stores and what kinds of conditions they need to grow:

I actually have a fifty 5 gal with java ferns, so... Ottos are notably good for preserving the glass sparkling. from time to time they sell a sort of fish it is approximately an inch long, talked approximately as a "Siamese algae eater" or a "Butterfly algae eater" or a "Siamese pleco." it is not a real pleco, and would not get that super. It seems extra like a flat pebble with a tail, and it has little spots throughout it. those men devour the algae off the glass, and in no way touch the vegetation. Malay trumpet snails do help a sprint, yet they might get out of hand, and the only good thank you to maintain them in examine is to get a loach. Ramshorn snails (American ones, with the purple epidermis) are a sprint extra appropriate, yet they actually pass all out, and that they might carry ailments. in case you weigh down a number of them, the gouramis and the tetras will ultimately start up eating the babies. An apple snail would paintings. I even have some doubts approximately them with java ferns, yet i'm notably particular the actual difficulty replaced into the pleco, and that they hardly stay for extra advantageous than a twelve months besides. i've got got here across that brighter light fixtures additionally help. it's time to alter out the tubes. different sources advise 6 months to a twelve months between each replace out. while you're low fee like me, you are able to wrap the interior the fixture with aluminum foil, yet be careful to not get that too on the verge of fall down of the contacts, and verify to tape it down good.

May I recommend Java Moss? It gets to be a bright green color and will grow in any water conditions, as long as the temp is right and the lighting and co2 make no difference either. It grows really fast and is cheap. I got mine for 8 dollars on ebay. If you have a pleco or a buenos aires tetra, have no fear, they won't eat it.

Stem plants are some of the most popular plants available for decorating aquariums!
Stem plants go well almost everywhere; in the background, along the sides, and in the center. They are fairly easy to propagate due to the fact that you can simply plant the cuttings from the present plants. These usually have long stems and look good when planted in groups. See a listing of the Types of Stem Plants below:

Anacharis, Cabomba, Hornwort, Broadleaf Ludwigia,
Creeping Jenny Japanese Rush, Dwarf Rotala or Tooth-cup Water Milfoil, Water Primrose, Water Wisteria, Fountain Plant, Brazilian Pennywort.

Instead of Java Moss, try Taiwan or Christmas Moss, it is more atractive and usually forms more geometric branchings. It may cost a little more, but it is worth it. Also, try tying Java Fern to some driftwood!
