I've borrowed a old model Ford Windstar. After I parked and turn off the car I turned the steering wheel a bit so that I could put the Club on the steering wheel. After doing this, the steering wheel is locked, won't turn in either direction, and I am unable to turn the key in the ignition to start the van. Any solutions?

You may have to put some pressure on the wheel to get it move enough for the key to turn. Pull hard on the wheel, and you should be ok!!

Yeah, I had this problem the second day I was driving a Ford Free star, Company (Employer) owned van. I was sure something was broken, because the key just wouldn't turn. Then I remembered I had been holding the steering wheel turned with some torque on it when I shut it off. And I applied quite a bit of force to get the wheel to move about 1/2 an inch,(It would only go one way because the locking mechanism was solidly engaged,) Then the key turned easily! after turning it to the "Unlock" position, the steering wheel twisted about 1/2 a turn from the action of rubber on pavement.

It took a VERY VIGOROUS twist to get the pressure off the column lock but that is jambing the key. Use two hands, it will move a little one way or the other, when it does the key will unlock easily!

Steering Wheel Lock

Try moving the steering wheel slightly in either direction and see if the key will turn. If it doesn't work first try change directions and try again.

Most likely the steering wheel is putting pressure on the key lock so the key can't be turned. Relieve that pressure and the key should turn and unlock the steering wheel.

This happens to my sisters cavalier all the time !!!try the best you can to move the steering wheel around while trying to turn the key. just be easy on the key as not to break it in the ignition which would be worse. i know it sounds stupid cuz the steering wheel is locked but it is why the key wont turn and once the key goes into the on position it releases the steering wheel.it happens all the time to me and thats how the problems resolved

Put a small amount of torque on the key while trying to turn the steering wheel back & forth.

You need to jiggle it back and forth while turning the key at the same time. Usually works, but might take a bit to get the right spot to unlock it.
