The lead singer was John Lennon and came out about 1965. I heard it was never on an album, but was released only as a single. Is this true?

This Boy was on Meet the Beatles by Capitol Records - circa 1964. This Boy is also on Beatles Past Masters Volume One - also by Capitol Records circa 1988. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison sing the song in harmony. A wonderful song and if you are interested I have attached the 1960's youtube television broadcast of this song.
