Yeah, I think that is weird because you live there. I think he would be teased in school. I realize the sentiment is very thoughtful, but you may want to use it as a middle name.

Come over here Manhattan! Clean up your room Pittsburgh. It's just odd.

Offer a compromise... Name your child's middle name Raleigh or if you decide to name him with Raleigh as his/her first name, come up with a short name like Ral or Leigh for everyday uses.

My hometown is called Alexandria and I would be proud to call my daughter Alexandria. I would call her Dria or Ria for short. You could also use Alex or Andria or Alexa or Xandria. There are too many people with the same name. Mine is Sarah and I can't even begin to count the number of times that I hear my name being called out and most of the time it's not me that's being called. Best of luck and be healthy!!

Honestly, in NC I dont think the locals would think it strange at all, having lived in the south myself. Raleigh (pronounced like the city) sounds like a boys name, but pronounced like "Ray-Lee" would be cute for a girl.

This is random, but growing up I had five Emily's in my class. Just thought I'd put that out there... lol. I love that name, Raleigh. My friend's son is Austin, and she lived in Austin, Texas until he was 12 (he's 20 now) and if people asked, she'd simply say, "The name suit him best when I saw his dimples" and then the subject would change to his or her beautfiul feature.

Is Raleigh supposed to be for a boy or girl?

I think that you have to consider what effects it will have on the child, not only growing up, but also when he becomes an adult. He is surely to be picked on in school and I don't think it's the best functioning name for an adult male either. Maybe you and your husband can compromise and come up with something else. If push comes to shove, use it as a middle name.

I think it sounds like a boys name and it's not a problem if you want to use it and still live in Raleigh. Who cares when it's a cool name! If you were naming him Houston and lived in Houston, I'd have a problem. :)

Go for it.. the name is unique, she will not be one of 25 Emily's in the class or on the playground.Or use Raleigh as the middle name.
Hope this helps :)

That wouldn't stop me! But if it really bothers you, you could alter the name a bit, by perhaps spelling is a bit differently, and it would still be pronounced the same, like Ryleigh. I think that looks awesome and it could also be spelled Riley. You'd completely remove the association right there with that spelling. But you'll have to decide! Good luck!
