Stooling patterns can vary so much. It's not abnormal for a baby to have multiple stools per day, nor is it abnormal for a baby to go multiple days between stools. I'd be more worried if he weren't peeing, he should be having 6-10 wet diapers per day. When he does poop, you should be worried if he seems to be straining hard to pass the stool and if it is very hard or has blood in it. Otherwise, as long as your baby poops every few days and its relatively soft there's nothing to worry about. His stool will change a lot over this first year and will start to resemble adult stools as he becomes older. If he is formula fed his stool will be more consistent than a breastfed baby because your diet will cause changes in his stool. His first stools were nearly black and tarry, but he'll settle into something that more closely resembles Grey Poupon mustard. Then, in a few months you'll start solids and have a whole new set of stools. And then in a few years you'll be like me and not be able to believe how much time you've put into analyzing poop over the last few years, LOL!

A newborn can go for 2-3 days without pooping while getting used to their new diet and all the changes in their little bodies. Try gently massaging his tummy if he gets cranky and see if that helps. If he has not had a BM in 2-3 days call his pediatrician for advise. There are things I could tell you but when it comes to a baby I am uncomfortable giving out medical advise. It is normal for them to skip a day or two though.

Don't worry... I breast fed and my first passed stools every feed but my second once a week and they were both fine. Your baby will let you know if any thing is wrong. Sometimes we get a bit anxious about our babies especially if it's the first. If the baby is feeding well, he may be fussing because he feels your nervousness or maybe he has had enough. Babies eat when they are hungry not because it's time to eat. I never set a schedule for feeding, if baby wakes and wants a feed then feed him. If he doesn't want any don't worry he probably had enough last feed. Don't wake your baby because you think it's time to feed, he will wake and let you know in good time.
After saying all this ...if you feel uneasy then see the pediatrician by all means just to put yourself at ease.

Both of my kids went a day as newborns without pooping. Usually the next day meant a blowout. At 6 days docs aren't as concerned of the number of poops per day as long as theyre' eating and growing so I wouldn't worry about it. If its more than 2 days the baby's probably constipated. I'd call the doc for an OTC med.
Have you changed the diet at all?

I am a mother and if I remember correctly newborns should have atleast 4 stools a day. But I do advice you calling your doctor or an ask a nurse at your local hospital to get advice. You can never be too safe when it comes to your children. The yahoo is not a good source.

If more than 2 days have passed, and your baby hasnt pooped, then I would call the pediatrician.. It's normal for them not to poop for about a day or so.. But I would call the pediatrician just to be on the safe side.
Good Luck.. :o)

Tracy its time to call the doctor especially if whats going in isnt coming out. As you know by now they potty numerous times per day. My oldest daughter had a similar problem and the doctor literally stuck his finger in her behind to get her to go. She was plugged for lack of a better word. Not saying thats your sons problem but he told us it was a common occurance for newborns. Call the doc @ least it will make you feel better. Good luck and congrats on your new son.
